Visual Impact

In 2007, the MCF's Design and Innovation Taskforce started work on a strategy and tools to improve the visual outcomes of mobile network infrastructure prior to its deployment. The aims of the Taskforce Project were to identify techniques and guidelines which could be applied to everyday mobile phone base station site design processes to achieve better siting and visual outcomes.

The Taskforce finalised its work in 2008 following a 3 month trial in the field and it released the MCF Mobile Network Base Station Deployment Technical Paper, the MCF Base Station Design Guide Tool and a User Manual.

All carrier staff and their contractors now fully utilise these tools to ensure a consistent approach. It also demonstrates to local government, property owners and the community how the proposed installation may impact on the visual amenity of the location and provides design strategies that can be used to enhance compatability and reduce the visual effect.

The Technical Paper can be used as a resource and instruction guideline at the initial design stage of the installation of a mobile phone base station.

The Mobile Base Station Design Guide Tool provides a structured process to document and assess the landscape context of a proposed mobile phone base station. Once all of the information has been inserted, the Design Guide Tool generates a design framework with guiding principles which minimise the visability of the proposed mobile phone base station.

To ensure effective management of the system, a User Manual was also produced to fully explain the Mobile Network Base Station Design Guide.
